Horn Objects
Folk Art Keepsake Box
Here is a small lathe turned horn box. It has a loose Fraktur style to it. The wooden bits are turned from mesquite wood from Arizona. The top’s knob and inlay are turned from horn as well.
Tudor Rose Keepsake Box
The Tudor Rose is the traditional floral heraldic emblem of England and is engraved in four places. This horn box is lathed turned. The base and top are American black walnut.
North Carolina Banded Blowing Horn
Here is a blowing horn I made for Jeremiah; he is a historic interpreter who works at the Historic Stagville Plantation. He will use it in his overseer impression.
European Style Blowing Horn
This blowing horn features spun pewter bands and bell. The metal bits started as a flat metal disks. This is one of my Journeyman’s pieces.
Lake George 1756 Horn Beaker
This beaker or cup is lathe turned out of cow horn. The design is adapted from the Lake George style of engraving. This is one of my Journeyman’s pieces.
Hornbook
A hornbook is a teaching tool that was used for over 300 years. It is basically a paddle with a press-printed lesson covered with a flattened piece of translucent horn or mica.
Tansel Style Kumpf or Whetstone Horn
Here is horn that is adapted with a belt hook; it holds a whetstone for sharpening a scythe blade in the field. The Tim Tansel style engraving is contemporaneous to the style of the kumpf.
